STUDY ON DISTRIBUTION OF LECTIN RECEPTOR IN SALIVARY GLAND TUMORS

Abstract
-Abstract-
Authors had immunohistochemical study on lectin distribution of salivary gland tumors
in oral cavity by use of 6kinds of lectin, Con A, WGA, PNA, UEA-¥°, RCA-¥°, DBA,
SBA in order to discuss histogenesis, pathogenesis, tumor cell activity of salivary gland
tumor through the carbohydrates changes associated with malignant transformation, the
chemical structures of carbohydrates-containing polymers, the biochemical events
involved in cell division, and the structure of cellular membrane with specific sugar
binding of lectin.
The results were as follow.
1. Pleomorphic adenoma showed Con A and WGA specificity of peripheral tumor cell,
and Con A, WGA, PNA, and UEA-¥° focal specificity of luminal cell, and WGA, PNA,
and UEA-¥° of basal cell, and WGA and PNA of apical glycocalyx, and WGA, PNA,
Con A, and SBA of duct content. WGA, PNA, Con A specificity of keratin, and PNA,
focal specificity of mucoid and myxoid stroma were observed.
2. Adenoid cystic carcinoma showed WGA, and PNA, specificity of lminal cell, and
especially all negative staining of pseudo cystic lining cell, proper. WGA and Con A
specificity of apical duct glycocalyx, and WGA focal specificity of duct content were
seen.
3. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma showed WGA, PNA, and Con A and DBA specificity, and
WGA, SBA, PNA, UEA-¥°, and RCA-¥° focal specificity of intermediate cell. WGA and
UEA-¥°focal specificity of mucous cell, and WGA, PNA, UEA-¥°, and SBA of duct
content were observed.
